Ritual art
The themes
of Madhubani paintings are mainly religious and ritualistic.

Three sisters – Manisha, Puja and Bandana – who are architects by
profession, are exhibiting Mithila folk art at Nehru Centre, till
May 6, Mithila folk art, more popularly called Madhubani, is an
ancient form of painting characterized by fine lines. It
originated in Mithila region in northem Bihar. “ It is a ritual
art”, says Manisha. The themes of Madhubani paintings are mainly
religious and ritualistic. A large Madhubani painting takes more
than a month to complete. When asked how they find time Manisha
answers, “ Where there is a will, there is a way, I wake up early
in the morning at four. I travel a lot so I paint in trains
sometimes. I can paint anywhere and as children we painted all
over the house ! Our parents always encouraged us “. |
 |
The trio has incorporated
modern themes besides the usual traditional ones. It is noticeable that
the Madhubani style is so powerful that it lends a traditional feel to
contemprary themes like ecology and other issues. Manisha remarks, “ Our
shows in Goa has given Madhubani an international audience” One can
notice Goan influences all over in the form of fishes and fishermen.
